Photons In Time - Kinetic Type

Photons in Time is a SCAD dynamic typography piece I created to the soundtrack of a Neil deGrasse Tyson talk which delves into the subject of photons and the passage of time at light speed.

Inspired by the timeless charm of 1960s textbooks, and their use of the timeless Helvetica font and abstract geometric patterns, I aimed to evoke the nostalgic essence of well-worn educational materials.

The intentional distressing and tactile elements incorporated into the design reflects the aged textbooks, inviting viewers to embark on a journey through both science and design history.

COLOR SCHEME

I deliberately restricted the color palette to red, green, and blue hues.

Each color represents an area of the visible light spectrum, intertwining with the scientific narrative of photons and time travel.

By restricting the palette to these primary hues, the design mirrors the subject and creates visual cohesion, allowing the audience to connect with the concepts explored in Neil deGrasse Tyson's talk.

ANIMATION TESTS

One of the joys of working with abstract geometric shapes, is that I was able to experiment in a somewhat freeform manner.

In many cases, I just started playing with shapes and motion, seeing how things came together, and when I found something that worked, I stored it in a comp and saved it for later.

Throughout this process I learned that when you start a comp called Animation Test, it removes the pressure of creating something perfect right away, and gives you room to build and experiment.
