Guys On Every Corner / Music Video

This is a 3D music video I made as a part of a SCAD class.

It’s for the 2022 song Guys On Every Corner by California band The Mountain Goats.

The writer John Darnielle says about the song: “That is a stakeout song that comes from a lot of these action movies, especially Italian ones, but also plenty of American ones—mafia or various mafia-adjacent things. I like the element of sort of a private militia that is lurking everywhere.

Visual Script & Production Schedule

Goin in I knew this project would be a myriad of simple elements creating a larger complex entity. So rather than spend a lot of time upfront making detailed storyboards, I made a visual script detailing how I thought the piece should flow, and used it as my roadmap.

I then made a schedule so I could always tell when I was and was not behind. The final week of the schedule is built out as ‘render’ time. This is to give myself a cushion by having the bulk of the project finished, and using that render time in case:

1. Renders take longer than expected.

2. Extra time for polish and small details

ANIMATION TESTS

My first priority for styleframes was just testing out the style itself.

I’ve never used Sketch and Toon for a larger project, so the ins and outs of lighting and texturing were a little unfamiar to me.

Once I reached the end of the project’s timeline, I was able to circle back and started adding things I had learned to the begining of it.

CHARACTER ANIMATION IN MAYA

For the small amount of character animation, I used Maya.

After animation I exported to alembic and used C4D for rendering and compositing.

RENDER STRATEGY

Becasue this project consisted of many many small renders, some 15 minutes some 4+ hours, I had to stay ahead of them.

I had a render qeue going almost all day, and just kept adding to it while working on other scenes/After Effects compositing.
