SAY NOTHING / MAIN TITLES

This is a title sequence I designed and animated for a mini series based on the book Say Nothing, a gripping examination of the tumultuous period in Northern Ireland known as “The Troubles”.

Written by Patrick Radden Keefe, Say Nothing unravels the complex web of secrecy and silence surrounding a notorious kidnapping and murder case, revealing the far-reaching impact of the conflict on individuals and communities. With meticulous research and storytelling, Keefe paints a vivid picture of the era, exploring themes of identity, justice.

A mini series depicting this subject matter would be dark and serious, in the vein of “The Night Of” or “The Wire”. The title sequence is designed to reflect the emotional impact of the show, and the affect these events had in real peoples lives.

PROCESS

Concept

The core concept is to use photos from the conflict as a visual narrative for the title sequence.

Photos can tell an entire story in 2 or 3 seconds, and effectively capture the essence of the gritty and violent period that the series aims to portray, instantly immersing the viewers in the historical context.

The use of real-life photographs adds authenticity and emotional depth, as it directly connects the audience with the actual events and people involved.

By incorporating these images, the sequence serves as a powerful storytelling tool, setting the tone and foreshadowing the intense and tumultuous journey that lies ahead in the series.

Texturing

The photographs were given scratched glass and concrete textures to add a sense of rawness and vulnerability, symbolizing the shattered lives and broken spirits of the people affected by the conflict.

It creates a visual representation of the hardships and struggles endured during that period.

They also convey a stark and oppressive atmosphere, mirroring the harsh realities of the Troubles and the unyielding nature of the conflict.
